About pi-gna

A desktop app for the pi coding agent, made because a good agent deserves a good room to work in. Grab an espresso, here’s the story.

Pigna as a barista, winking with an espresso

The name

Pigna is Italian for pine cone, and mano a pigna is the 🤌 gesture: fingertips pinched together, hand bobbing, asking “ma che vuoi?”, roughly “what do you want?”. It’s also how most of us feel watching an agent scroll by in a terminal.

So the hand became the P in the logo (Twemoji’s 🤌, mirrored and turned), and the P grew legs and became Pigna, the mascot all over this site.

A frontend, not a fork

pi-gna doesn’t reimplement pi. Every chat is a pi --mode rpc process running the pi you already installed, with your models, logins, settings, extensions, skills, prompt templates and MCP servers. Sessions are pi’s own files, so a chat started in the terminal continues in pi-gna, and back.

  1. pi-gnathe window: chats, browser, board, phone
  2. pi --mode rpcone process per chat, your pi
  3. your setupmodels, logins, extensions, skills, MCP, sessions

Built in the open

pi-gna is MIT licensed and developed on GitHub. Fittingly, it is built with pi, inside pi-gna.
